Animals

Highly desired by collectors, stoneware animal examples like standing Albany slip bulldogs, pigs, and cow & calf figures were part of Red Wing’s normal product line, and larger items like lions were made in multiple glazes as doorstops. However, the talents potters of Red Wing made other animals on a much more limited basis, indicating they were possibly created as ‘Lunch Hour’ items and given to friends or family or kept for personal display. Other than the large pieces that could be used as doorstops, stoneware animals were one of the few stoneware items that didn’t have a utilitarian purpose. Some may have been used as toys (albeit fragile ones), but aside from that, they were mostly decorative.
