Three brown pottery containers on a table

Albany Slip

The same brown “Albany slip” glaze that was used to coat the interior of large salt glaze pieces was also used on the exterior of a wide range of small wares, including jugs, jars, bowls, pitchers, bean pots, spittoons, animal figures and other items.

Most of Red Wing’s Albany slip items were sized 2 gallons and smaller, but the companies also made Albany slip beehive jugs up to 5 gallons in size. Usually the 3, 4 and 5 gallon sizes had a respective numeral scratched into the clay to identify the jug’s capacity.
