George Rumrill – The Rumrill Era-Red Wing 1932-1937

George Rumrill, founder of RumRill Potteries (1929) in Little Rock, AR, partnered with Red Wing Union Stoneware from 1932 to 1937 for manufacturing pottery in Rumrill’s name. (In 1936 the business name of Red Wing Union Stoneware changed to Red Wing Potteries.) The Rumrill partnership offered an opportunity for an expanded market presence. Working with Rumrill, Red Wing Union Stoneware Company was able to reintroduce existing art ware shapes, develop new ones, and create new glazes. Pieces produced for Rumrill were usually incised bottom marked with “RumRill”. The Red Wing Potteries relationship with Rumrill dissolved in 1937; but Red Wing Potteries work for Rumrill gave the company more national exposure. George Rumrill continued with new adventures at other potteries until his death in 1942. Many of the most popular and highly collectible pieces of RumRill were from the Athenian Group, often times referred to as the Nude Series which premiered in July 1935.
